Character name: Lord Death
Fandom: Soul Eater
Timeline: Manga: Chapter 99.
Age: Somewhere around the age of dirt. Maybe older.
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Due to various reasons, the extent of Death’s powers are not very well defined in canon, so most of this is a combination of what has been shown in the manga, shown in other media, and educated guesses.
His most unique ability is Soul Perception: he can see people’s souls. This allows him to: one, get a quick summary of a person’s personality and how strong they are, although it’s possible for certain characters to obscure the true natures of their souls; two, this allows him to sense people from a great distance, which entails where they are, current changes in personality (stress, fear), and how close they are to death; third, there’s probably a dozen different aspects to it which have yet to be explained in canon, seeing as how his OWN Soul Perception is never explored too much and is mostly based on other characters who have the power, too, but are an incredibly tiny fraction as strong and as old as he is.
His other powers include: magical yellow eye lasers, powerful magical yellow energy shields, flight (which sometimes involve floating skull jets, which could very well be there entirely for show), ridiculous speed (akin to Bleach’s ‘flash stepping’), basically immortality (certain people suggest he can be killed, but he got somewhere between two thirds and four fifths of his body eradicated and he seemed to be pretty a-okay), some vaguely defined shapeshifting (his size and shape is not exactly static, he can dramatically change the size of his hands, he can drastically change the length of his arms, and he has stated outright that he COMPLETELY changed his physical appearance once), some sort of hammer space inside his own body (he keeps…a mandolin, giant kitty paw gloves, and his OWN ENORMOUS HANDS there, along with who knows what else), and his infamous REAPER CHOP, which is, quite literally, a karate chop he uses for both slapstick humor and as an actual devastating attack in battle. Of course, he also has the typical super strength associated with every major shounen series character: he can punch and chop city blocks into submission and redirect energy attacks capable of blasting craters into the earth. Oh, he can also travel through mirrors like some sort of teleporting ability.
Although it’s not a power, per se, Death is pretty much an expert at using any sort of weapon there is, whether it be a gun, hammer, or axe; naturally, however, his preferred weapon is a scythe.
Also, along with most of the Soul Eater cast, he can also use Soul Resonance, which means combining his ‘Soul Wavelength’ with a Weapon-type human to amplify their power. Because it’s stressed that only Weapons who have attained the title of ‘Death Scythe’ are allowed to be used by Death, I assume ordinary Weapons quite simply cannot handle resonating with his soul. One of his most powerful skills used while using Soul Resonance is the Kishin Hunter, a technique that purifies evil and kill gods.
Appearance: He’s a big black thingy with a goofy skull mask.
His height is not static and seems to vary by several feet, but, on average, he is VERY BIG: about ten to twelve feet tall (pointy head thingy included), I’d say, considering his comparative height with a tall adult male human. Still, his body is actually quite spring-like, so he can get a bit shorter or taller at will.
His body is very cool! At first he appears to be a black blotch with spikes which…is sort of what he is, but on closer inspection, these ‘spikes’—which are not really consistent, like his height—are more like the collar, sleeves, and other parts of a trenchcoat or cloak. You know, like the Grim Reaper is USUALLY shown wearing? Still, since this is technically his body and not clothing, it’s not readily apparent. The lower portion of his body is a zig-zag, which acts a bit like a spring, as mentioned before. Along with affecting his height, it makes him…well, a bit springy. He has numerous ways of walking, but one involves using the lower half of his body as a spring, allowing him to bounce along and sometimes make ‘boingy’ sounds in the process.
He’s capable of absorbing his hands and arms into his body so that he looks completely armless; when he takes them back out, they make silly, cartoony popping (whoop-POING) noises. His hands are ENORMOUS and blocky and, again, cartoony: they look like someone took a five foot by five foot by one foot chunk of tofu and cut it into the shape of a hand.
His ‘face’ (which is either his actual face or a mask—NO ONE KNOWS in canon or otherwise) takes on the appearance of a rather cute, silly-looking cartoony skull. He has a zig-zag…thing on his head, which seems to be an extension of whatever it is the rest of his body is made of.
Background/Personality: WELL. Considering he is the physical manifestation of a concept (death and order) and being referred to as a ‘Great Old One’ (A Lovecraftian Elder God), Mister Reaper here came into being roughly around the time of who-knows-when. Assuming him to be the first Grim Reaper, I would guess him to be about as old as whatever was the first thing to develop a soul.
Lord Death lived to serve two purposes: to keep the order in the world with a strict iron fist and to destroy humans who had become evil; these evil humans’ souls would manifest as something named a ‘Kishin Egg’. They were referred to as eggs because, assuming they were left unchecked, these beings would eventually become a Kishin, which was a breed of evil god which existed as a chaotic opposite to order the God of Death represented. As the birth of a Kishin would lead to the world and, specifically, humanity plummeting into chaos and anarchy, he had a preoccupation with trying to prevent Kishin from appearing.
At some point, a race of beings known as Witches appeared. Similar to the Kishin, they lived to spread chaos and enjoyed destruction. Death did not like that! With his righteous fury, he sought to eradicate the Witches. To assist him, he collected a group of other like-minded warriors/Elder Gods to help him destroy the Witches and evil humans under the agreement that only targets he specified as deserving punishment would be killed.
Over time, one of the Eight Old Ones named Asura grew to be so powerful that he single handedly defeated every Witch in Asia before even one of the other warriors could make it there to support him. Death eventually recognized this human (although Death later questions if Asura was really human, ever) to be his equal in power.
Eventually, Asura snapped as a result of his irrational paranoia and cowardice: he literally ate his Weapon partner (Vajra, presumably another one of the Eight) whole and began slaughtering humans to eat their souls. In a bit of irony, one of the people Death himself chose to help prevent the rising of a Kishin became the first Kishin in Earth history. Like Death, Asura became a god; however, instead of ‘order’, Asura became the physical manifestation of ‘fear’, and had such power that he would drive mortals mad just by being in their presence. Asura also went on to eat two more of the ‘Eight Old Ones’, leaving a total of five (including himself and Death) alive.
After the Earth was nearly annihilated by Asura destroying entire nations and his Insanity Wavelength—which was his soul, so strong that it influenced every human being on the planet—caused people the world over to eventually become insane, which lead to chaos and anarchy. After a long, long battle, the God of Death defeated the God of Madness—in Nevada, of all places—but either incapable of or unwilling to destroy Asura, Death sealed him in a bag made of Asura’s own skin and hid him in the basement.
This is when the Grim Reaper’s personality makes an incredible change. Before, Death distanced himself from humanity and carried out his job of protecting the world, destroying evil humans, and eliminating Witches with cold efficiency. Being the most powerful and oldest being in the world, he thought himself to be infallible and cared little for the opinions of mortals, even though their protection and safety were his highest priorities.
When he put together his Eight Warriors and as a result began spending time with humans, he gradually became less cold but still very, very serious. He was also…well, quite grim, which was probably quite fitting for obvious reasons. He allowed humans great freedom while watching over them. He always loathed Witches, however.
When Asura sort of wiped out about 4/5s of the planet and Death was forced to use his own soul as a seal to keep the Kishin asleep, he realized he had quite a bit of work to do. The other three remaining Great Old Ones went off into seclusion: the Black Mass (a nameless god representing ‘power’ and the effect it has on mortals) hid itself away; Eibon, the embodiment of ‘knowledge’ and its effects on mortals’ minds, secluded himself away as well; the last, a god representing ‘rage’ is strongly hinted to be the Weapon Excalibur, who rests in a hidden cave..
Being unable to leave Nevada, he couldn’t exactly help restore the world or keep Witches and future would-be Kishin in their places (i.e. dead), so he decided to kill several birds with one stone: before Asura’s evolution into a Kishin, the Witch Arachne created the race of beings known as ‘Demon Weapons’ (in other words, all the people with the power to transform into literal weapons), which turned out to be hereditary, leaving many, many people in the world with the power. So, he decided to teach these people to control their power and use what had originally been an evil Witch’s plan to conquer the world as a tool for good; they would—either by themselves or with a partner—kill Kishin Eggs and Witches in Death’s place.
Of course, that would mean teaching children and children were scared of him! In their defense, he was really freaking scary looking when he was younger. To get around this, he not only changed his behavior and voice, but also changed his entire appearance entirely for the sake of appearing kinder and more kid-friendly. Hence, all the goofy aspects of his appearance are COMPLETELY INTENTIONAL, all the way down to the POING sounds his hands make and his body being all springy.
After a hundred years (which would bring us to the current timeline of the series), Death’s goofy, friendly behavior which was originally fake eventually became his real personality: he admitted himself that he grew into the role and grew fond of it. Although he originally intended for the school to be a source of Meisters and Weapons to keep the peace in the world, his very close interactions with humans—especially children—changed him incredibly. He grew to become more relaxed, incredibly goofy, very friendly, and very compassionate, all the while still being wise and dedicated to his students who he adored.
Basically, he became Dumbledore.
Sometime during these one hundred years, he had a son—HOW this happened is completely unknown and we will not even attempt to go into the theoretical biological explanations for how the embodiment of death can reproduce—which also had an unexpected impact on him. It can be assumed by various clues in the series (the manga, specifically) that Death the Kid is more than just a son, but very likely some sort of extension or reincarnation of Lord Death himself; why he would create something such as this has various explanations: one, he was permanently stuck in Nevada, specifically Death City which had literally become a part of his body, which hindered how much help the God of Death could be in the world; two, he was very, very old and as his beliefs and personality changed, he may have realized that creating a brand new Grim Reaper more familiar with humanity to replace him would be best; three, having a Grim Reaper on the outside to keep tabs on the Weapons and Meisters would be greatly helpful, as Grim Reapers are incapable of becoming a Kishin (although still capable of becoming crazy-spreading Lovecraftian Elder Gods, just not that kind).
However—whether due to his time spent around humans or the result of unexpected paternal instincts—Death quickly grew to genuinely love his son, Kid, as much as any human father could love a son. This, naturally, changed his personality further in that parental relationships became something he could relate to and placed great importance in; it also caused him to become ever more wacky, likely due to his son being the most anal retentive being in the cosmos, and he also became more compassionate. This compassion can be seen most blatantly in the fact that he has now allowed two—TWO—Witches to attend his school, allows humans CONSIDERABLE freedom in deciding how to enforce his orders, AND has allowed himself to make a peace agreement with the Witches, something that the original Death would never have condoned.
Despite his goofy exterior, he still has the same strongly-held dedication to protecting the world, humanity, and order he had hundreds of years ago. He has actually grown to loathe having to rely on his students and son to fight the Witches and the harvest the evil human souls—even more so when Asura escaped. If possible, Death would be the first person on the front lines fighting against the villains and he hates having to send his students and son in his place.
As I mentioned, despite all of the Grim Reaper’s precautions, the Kishin escaped due to the actions of a Witch named Medusa. Since then, he has been stuck in Death City, able to only give orders and commands to his Weapons and Meisters while they went out to defeat the forces of the Witch Arachne and a Kishin-worshipping organization headed by the sorcerer Noah. Much to his frustration, he has only been able to be a supportive character and unable to directly influence the events of the war. Being more-or-less the ruler of the world, he surely has his hands full trying to keep the governments in order while the world slowly succumbs to madness and fear, but even then he has likely only a limited control and influence over the world.
At the point from which he will be taken, he has sent Kid to make a peace agreement with the Witches to help defeat Asura and then sent Kid to the moon to take command of the attack on the Kishin. It is strongly hinted that, once Kid fully realizes his power as a Grim Reaper, Death himself will die, stating that he will never get to see his son’s smiling face again.
Have you read up on how the game works?: The plug-in for the guide is the FlamingFerret. Characters get money via missions, taking jobs, or being a hobo and mooching off others.
1st person sample:
[Death stares down at the computer terminal before him, expressing as much concentration as he could with his white mask for a face. Finally, after some time he attempts to press a key and, due to his finger being a bit over a foot in circumference, presses about half the keyboard at once, making the following appear in text:
pmottioyh.0[;ijnhnghojingo[‘/.pjgj/./,./?gnj
Oh my, this is not working out at all. I never was one for computers! Doesn’t help that this thing is far too small. Now, how does Spirit usually fix—ah, yes, yes.
[He is now slapping the keys like a hyperactive child would assault a Whack-A-Mole game. That is until miraculously, somehow, he manages to activate the video and voice applications. He claps.]
Oh, good, good. I feel like I’m at home already!
[He intertwines his fingers and gives his knuckles a good CRACK in front of himself and behind his back before going on. Viewers will see the enormous black figure with a stationary skull mask waving quite energetically and listeners will hear a very…odd and fairly goofy-sounding old man’s voice.]
Well, hi, there! Hello, hello! My name is Death, though I’ll answer to any number of things: the Grim Reaper, God of Death, Shinigami, or anything else of that sort.
Now that introductions are complete, I would like it if someone could explain a few things to me. It seems as though I’ve been taken to some sort of spaceship—very, very interesting!—but…impossible.I would assume this to be Mabaa’s doing, but even she couldn’t…
The book was a nice gesture—Oh, don’t panic? Good advice!—but I’m not sure what use this towel is for. Who would ever need so many forms, anyways? Really.
Anyways~
Any help would be very, very appreciated! Bai-bai!
Oh, how do I shut this off? Let’s see if this works aga—oh, I can install this to my—<
[After assaulting the terminal with his enormous fingers in an attempt to stop the recording, Mister Reaper here succeeds. He is now going to figure out how to make his guide work for future communication because…well, did I mention those fingers were huge for a normal-sized computer?]
3rd person sample:
The knowledge had come as quite a shock to him, although others would be unlikely to notice, partly due to the expressionless skull mask and partly due to hundreds of years of practice of masking emotion. Lord Death had been the protector of his world and for it to have been destroyed meant he had failed at his eternal job.
The tall figure allowed himself a long sigh when he was sure none were watching and nothing was recording. His face-mask scrunched up into a furious expression and he cursed quietly. After a moment, Death relaxed and took the growing emotions inside of him and let them out with another sigh. Giving into anger, despair, or, even worse, fear would do no good. For the sake of humanity, his friends, his son, and his students he would move forward to figure out what there was to be done about the circumstances.
In the meantime, he would make the best of the circumstance. It had been quite literally a century since he had been anywhere beyond Death City, so his curiosity concerning this new setting was quite strong. Perhaps he would take his son to see the dolphins? He would certainly enjoy that!
